Deals sorted by AAV.
A lot of the newest signings will be at the bottom, as that's the purgatory for deals without full details yet.
Chris Paul re-signs with Suns
4 years, $120 million (seasons aged 37-40)
Grade: C-
CP3 turned down a $45 million dollar player option to sign this deal. That was the largest declined option in NBA (sports, really) history. It was inarguably the correct decision.
The Suns had to do this. Paul was worth this last year, and could be again. But he won't be when he's 40. Hell, he might not be worth that for 3 out of 4 of the seasons on this deal. He has shown clear signs of slowing down. His body is betraying him. This is going to be tough when they have to pay Deandre Ayton and Mikal Bridges, and max or super-max Devin Booker again.
Two things to note: 1.) Paul's game ages beautifully, so I think his baseline is really high, and he'll never truly bottom out. 2.) There is a very real chance that he retires during this deal. That's rare though, because being tired probably is not enough of a reason to turn down over 30 M's.
Kyle Lowry sign-and-traded to the Heat
3 years, ~$90 million (seasons aged 36-38)
Grade: A
Raptors get back Goran Dragic, Precious Achiuwa, and a future second-round pick
A dream fit with Jimmy Butler especially, but with this entire Heat team. He'll embody the culture: defense, hustle, three-point shooting, unselfishness, buying in to concepts bigger than the individual. He's a year younger than Paul, and the deal is a year shorter, and he's shown less signs of decline. Him, Tyler Herro, Jimmy Butler, Bam Adebayo is a high-end four best players. Imagine if they had Jae Crowder at power forward!
DeMar DeRozan sign-and-traded to the Bulls
3 years, $85 million (seasons aged 32-24)
Grade: B-
Spurs get back Thaddeus Young, future first-round pick, two second-round picks
DeRozan was on the forefront of a power forward revolution fructified this past season. The position is now fully an extension of wing, and his prodigious passing helped cement the new requirements of the position. He averaged a career-high 6.9 assists, and was his typically uber-efficient scoring self. He would have been All-NBA if this was the talent devoid '00s to early '10s.
But he still can't shoot, and age will not make him a better defender. Though he is a passable one, playing next to Nikola Vucevic requires a great one. Oh well. The Bulls always suck at defense. Go all in on O and have a blast and win a series or two.
Michael Conley, Jr. re-signs with Jazz
3 years, $72.5 million (seasons aged 34-36)
Grade: B+
I thought the Jazz were better than the Suns this year. They got matchup-ed to death by the Clippers, whose perimeter scoring and wing talent exposed Utah's biggest hole. This is less than what Conley was getting the past two years, so even though they're paying him, they actually gain wiggle room from this deal. He was worth $24M last season, and should be again this year, his age 34 season. Only question on the deal is how it looks when he's 35 and 36, but IF the wheels fall off, this will be an expiring deal. The 2024 Thunder will take that on for a future second.
Lonzo Ball sign-and-traded to the Bulls
4 years, $85 million (seasons aged 23-26)
Grade: A-
The Pelicans get back Tomas Satoransky, Garrett Temple, and a second-round pick.
I would not have paid Ball a cent more than this, especially as Chicago. Had he gotten any more, they'd be locked into a Ball-Zach LaVine-Nikola Vucevic core with no wiggle room. Yes, that group will be better each year it continues, but that's not enough to get over the hump. Luckily, they have room on the margins to continue improving. LaVine gets paid after next year, but Vuc doesn't have a bad deal ($46M over the next two seasons). His next contract will be cheaper, or they let him walk and they have cap space and a star duo locked up, with both entering their primes. Sending back Sato's $10M helps. Only question is if Lonzo's success so far is for real. If it was, he's going to keep improving and reaching his high potential.
Spencer Dinwiddie signs with Wizards
deal unknown - reported: 3 years, roughly $60 million (age 28-30)
Grade: B+
Dinwiddie has torn his ACL twice. That's the lead here. When healthy, he's a top-notch finisher, a high-end creator, and a large bodied, versatile defender. His jump shooting is adequate at best, which is still an upgrade over Russell Westbrook. And his usage being so much lower should help the team improve. Dinwiddie wanted to play in DC. That's new. I like the fit, but the roster is in flux still, like most teams on here. The 'Zards don't have the cap space to just sign him, which means this was a sign-and-trade with Brooklyn. So we'll see how this transaction ends up.
Jarrett Allen re-signs with Cavaliers
5 years, $100 million (seasons aged 23-27)
Grade: B+
Really hard for this to deal to end up looking bad. Allen was unlocked by getting more responsibility, better fit, and a consistent role in Cleveland. He's a quality two-way big who can't be played off of the floor, with a near all-star ceiling. We have seen that, contrary to belief of a year or two ago, centers have not gone extinct. As the cap goes up, this deal will look more and more reasonable, if not a steal. No worries in my mind about his fit with Evan Mobley, who will be playing his best NBA position at power forward.
Evan Fournier signs with Knicks
4 years, $78 million (seasons aged 28-31)
Grade: A
Wow. The most unexpected deal so far. There were not many murmurs of this at all. Fournier is exactly what the Knicks need. They lacked perimeter scoring, shot creation, ball handling, and creation. Check Fournier's four best skills. This is a great value too. New York gets notably better with this deal. His gravity and spacing will improve RJ Barrett and Julius Randle's games, both of which are built inside-out.
Norm Powell re-signs with Trailblazers
5 years, $90 million (seasons aged 28-32)
Grade: B-
This is fair. Not inspiring, but the Blazers just traded for him so they couldn't lose Gary Trent for nothing. Powell is a legit scorer and shot creator, and that's perpetually valuable. For Portland, they have no true scoring threat outside of Dame and CJ. When Powell got there last year, things really picked up. This not only allows them to trade McCollum if they see fit, but gives their offense a lot more to work with. I just wish he added a lot to their defense.
Duncan Robinson re-signs with Heat
5 years, $90 million (seasons aged 27-31)
Grade: D
This is too much. We saw Joe Harris get 4/72, which is the same AAV as this deal, and it has worked out so far for Brooklyn because he set the world on fire again year one. Davis Bertans got 5/80, and he's viewed as a horrific deal because he was cold all year. Harris is easily better than Robinson, and Bertans is barely worse. Robinson has to be incredible to earn this money. 18 a year is a price Robinson has never been worth yet. He can get better and earn it, but I don't know.
MORE importantly: the most money ever for an undrafted player. Duncan, I am incredibly thrilled for you. Get that money, always. If a player is overpaid, that's the team's fault.
Tim Hardaway, Jr. re-signs with Mavericks
4 years, $72 million (seasons aged 28-31)
Grade: B-
THJ is worth this on his on nights. I don't want to paint the picture that he's strictly hot and cold, but consistency is what this is going to come down to. He switches between overpaid and underpaid more than anyone. BUT, he's coming off of the best season of his career. This deal covers ages 28-31, which are quite literally the four years of an NBA player's prime. If ever there is a time for him to be worth this money, it's now. He certainly can be. He brings shot creation, gravity, and off-ball scoring. He could really improve if Dallas adds anyone else, and he doesn't have to be option 2-3. This deal will never be a catastrophe, which is something to consider with every contract signed in free agency. If that safety exists, you can't grade anything that harshly.
Gary Trent, Jr. re-signs with Raptors
3 years, $54 million (seasons aged 22-24)
Grade: C+
I'm not high on GTJ compared to the rest of the league. He's worse than THJ, who got the same AAV. But he has upside. He's an overrated defender, but he can be solid on that end. At this point, he's just a three-point specialist, but he tries to be more. That's good when you're young, but if he doesn't develop, then we're going to say he has bad shot selection. This is paying him for potential, which is always a guessing game/impossible balance.
Will Barton re-signs with Nuggets
2 years, $32 million (seasons aged 30-31)
Grade: B
Barton is the longest-tenured Nugget. He's a quality starting small forward, who has no holes in his game. He'll likely have to carry extra scoring and ball handling load with Jamal Murray missing at least half of this season. Keeping him to do that instead of going out and getting someone for a part-time replacement is much, much smarter. It pays to be deep.
Richaun Holmes re-signs with Kings
4 years, $55 million (seasons aged 28-31)
Grade: A++
The second plus in the grade reflects the fact that this is the Kings. Not only did they do something right, but someone good chose to play for them. Someone who didn't have to play for them chose to play for them.
Rich Holmes is one of the best defending bigs alive. His offense features quality finishing, nice bounce, and good touch + range for a big. He could have had a bevy of other suitors, and played for better teams.
The Kings have not stopped talking about how they are pushing for the playoffs this year. If this deal didn't happen, that hope would literally have died. They could not have replaced Holmes because of their cap situation. It's amazing to me how little he signed for. We saw reports of the market for him around 4/80, and I thought that reasonable, with a chance some team went overboard. This could be the bargain of the offseason.
Derrick Rose re-signs with Knicks
3 years, $43 million (seasons aged 33-35)
Grade: B-
As I read this information, I said the word "overpay" out loud. Sometimes our gut is wrong, though. I don't think Derrick Rose is that good, but he doesn't really suck. He had what was easily the best year in a non-Bulls uniform of his career last season, and point guard was the team's biggest hole by far. The Knicks aren't going to overpay Dennis Schroder now, which is a good thing, and helps this grade by itself. But, if Rose is going for 14, and Schroder ends up signing for 16 or 17 or 18 on the same length, this looks a lot worse.
Doug McDermott to the Spurs
3 years, $42 million (seasons aged 29-31)
Grade: B
One of the best shooters on the market, McDermott put it all together for a career year in 2020-21. He added a lot of inside-the-arc scoring. He's great moving and off-the-ball, and can create a shot or two on the perimeter. No longer the worst defender in the NBA like when he was young. And he's big. The Spurs needed shooting maybe more than any other team. Their direction is still unclear at this moment, though. But this seems to suggest Rudy Gay and DeMar DeRozan are gone.
Devonte' Graham sign-and-traded to the Pelicans
4 years, $47 million (seasons aged 26-29)
Grade: A+
The Hornets get a New Orleans first-round pick in return
Devonte' Graham gives New Orleans their point guard of the near term, with a potentially high ceiling. Graham is the perfect fit for Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram. He's the epitome of an analytics point guard. He's pass first and best off-ball, setting the two All-Stars up and letting them do their thing. Graham takes more than two-thirds of his shots from three. He's shot just 38% from the field the past two seasons (disgusting at minimum), but that's because he's shot 37.4% from deep. He averaged 7.5 dimes a year ago, bursting onto the scene with his first year of any usage in the NBA, and then saw that number naturally shrink with the arrival of LaMelo Ball. So we don't know what his growth will be like, but my bet is good to great.
Kelly Olynyk to the Pistons
3 years, $37 million (seasons aged 30-32)
Grade: A-
Space the floor for Cade Cunningham, Killian Hayes, Jerami Grant, and Saddiq Bey. Don't crowd Isaiah Stewart. Provide steady, veteran scoring. Just be someone that isn't a child out there. They moved on from Mason Plumlee's deal, and then did this. The direction is clear about how they want to play. Kelly OIynyk is not worth 12M+ annually, but that's not the point here. The Pistons don't need the money right now, they need fit and optimized development. No downside to this deal.
Talen Horton-Tucker re-signs with Lakers
3 years, $32 million (ages 20-22)
Grade: C+
There is no way to not call this an overpay. But, like Trent, overpaying a young player is the most justified time. The Lakers couldn't have spent this money to bring someone in, so there really isn't a downside except for the tax bill. **** them owners.
THT is one of the most unique players in the league. He can provide tertiary rim protection at shooting guard because he's 6'4" with a 7'1" wingspan, handle the ball, and hit some insane self-created shots. He's going to be their perimeter little things guy with quality upside. Love him.
Nerlens Noel re-signs with Knicks
3 years, $32 million (seasons aged 27-29)
Grade: C+
This grade considers the Burks deal, as they came out at the same time. Contracts like these add up. Noel is one of the best defenders in the entire NBA. He played incredibly after Mitchell Robinson went down for the year. Getting insurance at the center position is smart. But if Noel is your starter, that's bad. If he's your backup, $10.7 million is a lot. In fairness, Robinson is not a 30-minute per game plus starter, so Noel is needed kind of regardless. One of the better backups in the league, and New York is in a tough spot considering Robinson's capricious health.
Reggie Bullock signs with Mavericks
3 years, $30.5 million (seasons aged 30-32)
Grade: B
Alec Burks can EAT IT. This Knicks wing got decisively more money, and permanent bragging rights. The Mavericks sorely missed Seth Curry, and 2019-20's shooting. Bullock will help a lot, and is a prototypical Mavericks wing. Josh Richardson moving on to Boston was another step in the right direction.
Alec Burks re-signs with Knicks
3 years, $30 million (seasons aged 30-32)
Grade: C
This deal is worse than Noel's. Both are really moveable, though. But Burks is someone who has been in the league forever, and it seems like we know what he is. That's a quality replacement wing, but not one to rely on and expect to win games. If they didn't think they could upgrade on the wing this offseason, then so be it. Don't overpay or panic, just maintain the course. This isn't a disaster, just underwhelming.
Alex Caruso signs with Bulls
4 years, $37 million (seasons aged 27-30)
Grade: B
This seems high. McConnell (right below) is better than Caruso. But it isn't always that simple. The Lakers are going to miss LeBald James. Caruso is basically better Kris Dunn, who the Bulls rightfully let walk last free agency. But the mold is great, and he should help them get the most out of Coby White, who is certain to come off of the bench now that Lonzo is in town. The Bulls defense was horrific last season, so adding these two guards will help a lot.
Daniel Theis signs with Rockets
4 years, $36 million (seasons aged 29-32)
Grade: A
This is the same as the Olynyk signing, except a defensive big instead. The Rockets have no stoppers (except the newly-drafted Usman Garuba) and a lot of O. Theis gives that frontcourt a vet, and a fine, actual NBA player. Can't have all kiddies.
T.J. McConnell re-signs with Pacers
4 years, $35.2 million (seasons aged 29-32)
Grade: B
One of the best backup guards in the association. Does it all except shoot, which honestly makes him more impressive. He does all this without the three nor athleticism. Mr. Reliable. You see $35 million and your eyes widen a little bit, but it's fine. Like I say in these longer deals, they'll look better by the time the later years roll around.
JaMychal Green re-signs with Nuggets
2 years, $17 million (seasons aged 31-32)
Grade: C
JaMychal Green is basically new Paul Millsap, but obviously worse. He's an awesome glue guy, but that's about all he is. This is a lot for a 7th or 8th man, but the Nuggets have no bloated deals or problems on their cap sheet. Depth has gotten them really, really far, so I can't knock them doing what they do. This looks a lot better with the addition of Jeff Green.
PJ Tucker signs with Heat
2 years, $15 million (seasons aged 36-37)
Grade: A
I said on Kyle Lowry's blurb that they missed Jae Crowder at power forward. How about the next closest thing, at half the price? We saw what PJ Tucker brought all playoffs long, and it culminated with a ring. He is the type of player that contenders love, and that playoff basketball demands you have. The Heat are back.
Zach Collins signs with Spurs
3 years, $22 million (seasons aged 23-25)
Grade: A-
Yeah, the Spurs are moving on from the DDR, Rudy Gay, LaMarcus Aldridge era. Collins is coming off an injury that only allowed him to play 11 games in 2019-20, and he didn't play at all last season. He had quality potential, though. This is one of those deals that can't come back to bite you. He plays the right way and is fundamentally sound. I know those sound like white guy things, but they're really Popovich things. Incredibly logical signing.
Cameron Payne re-signs with Suns
3 years, $19 million (seasons aged 27-29)
Grade: A
I really thought Payne would get overpaid based off one year of quality play, after being a street free agent. He was not an NBA player most of his career. A joyous redemption story. He loves it in Phoenix. This is good value for a high-end backup PG, especially to an aging starter.
Rudy Gay signs with Jazz
2 years, $12.1 million (seasons aged 35-36)
Grade: A+
The Jazz lacked wing defenders badly. It was the biggest gape in their otherwise most-rounded in the league roster. The Clippers exploited it in the playoffs to bounce them as the lower seed, after being down 2-0, in six, without Kawhi Leonard. This is a major need and a high quality fix. One of the best vets in the league.
Patty Mills signs with Nets
2 years, $12 million (seasons aged 33-34)
Grade: A-
The best part of this grade is that they kept Mills off of a different contending team. He's ring chasing clear as day. He provides Brooklyn with supreme veteran perimeter shot making and calming presence. They get more experience to help the still gelling core and new head coach Steve Nash.
Kendrick Nunn signs with Lakers
2 years, $10 million (seasons aged 26-27)
Grade: A
Nunn is better than Mills, but less experienced and less reliable. Also he's left-handed, which should be penalized. He turned down more money elsewhere to contend for a championship in his third season. Bold.
Furkan Korkmaz re-signs with 76ers
3 years, $15 million (seasons aged 24-26)
Grade: A
Korkmaz is the backup to Seth Curry. I love the mold of backup that is "give you exactly what the starter does, at about 80% the quality." So yes, Kork is a nice player. A Summer League legend; he put up 40 on 18 shots in his first-ever SL game. Another good thing about this signing is that they needed it: the 76ers are strapped for shooting, especially with Danny Green a free agent.
David Nwaba signs with Rockets
3 years, $15 million (seasons aged 28-30)
Grade: A-
Defense on the perimeter. Guard version of the Daniel Theis acquisition.
Robin Lopez signs with Magic
1 year, $5 million (season aged 33)
Grade: A
The Magic are the youngest team in the NBA. An old dude, a great vet, a technician, a minutes-eater. Exactly what they need. Led the NBA in points per possession on post-ups this season. That's no joke. Metrically sound defender.
JaVale McGee signs with Suns
1 year, $5 million (season aged 33)
Grade: A
The Suns straight up did not have a backup center last season. We saw what McGee did for the Warriors and Lakers en route to becoming a 3-time NBA champion.
Jeff Green signs with Nuggets
2 years, $10 million (seasons aged 35-36)
Grade: A
One of the best role players in the league because he can do everything on a basketball court. He shows up in the playoffs every year. There's a reason he always lands on contenders. Winning teams want Jeff Green, and Jeff Green makes teams win. He and the other J. Green will combine to replace Paul Millsap just fine, as the sum of those two brings everything Millsap did.
Cory Joseph re-signs with Pistons
2 years, $10 million (seasons aged 30-31)
Grade: B
Another quality veteran, exactly like the Olynyk signing. Joseph will come off the bench, and can continue showing Killian Hayes and start showing Cade a lot of the little things that have kept him in the league for a decade. The Pistons got Joseph and two second-round picks from the Kings for Delon Wright, who they moved for Tristan Thompson already. That was another win on Troy Weaver's belt.
Torrey Craig signs with Pacers
2 years, $10 million (seasons aged 30-31)
Grade: A-
There are so many bad wings in the NBA. Torrey Craig isn't a great one, but he's quality. Defense will always matter, as will rebounding. He hits a three every once in a while. You could do much worse.
Bruce Brown re-signs with Nets
1 year, $4.7 million (season aged 25)
Grade: A+
Much like the Talen Horton-Tucker deal, when you're capped out of space, you gotta retain your own guys. Brown is worth every dollar of this. He's one of the best rebounding guards alive, and a top-flight defender. He played some center in the playoffs for them because the roster was thin at big. Classic do-it-aller.
Ish Smith signs with Hornets
1 year, $4.5 millon
Grade: A
Charlotte will be the 12th team Ish Smith has played for in the NBA, tying him for the NBA record. He's been around like that because he's reliable. A quality backup point guard, who can help replace Malik Monk and Devonte' Graham and balance out Terry Rozier for LaMelo Ball.
Bobby Portis re-signs with Bucks
2 years, $9 million (seasons aged 26-27)
Grade: A+
Momentous fan favorite, coming off of a career year and good playoffs. I really expected him to get overpaid, especially on a thin stretch 4/5 market. Awesome value and story.
Moe Harkless signs with Kings
2 years, $9 million (seasons aged 28-29)
Grade: N/A
Who cares?
Gorgui Dieng signs with Spurs
1 year, $4 million
Grade: B+
Dieng has proven himself a quality backup. Should fit nice in the Spurs system, like everyone they get.
Mike Muscala re-signs with Thunder
2 years, $7 million (seasons aged 30-31)
Grade: A
The Thunder's version of 2020 NBA champion Jared Dudley. They really do not need Mike Muscala, so he must be an awesome vet.
Nicolas Batum re-signs with Clippers
2 years, $6.3 million (seasons aged 32-33)
Grade: A
Batum is a quality shooter, nice sized defender, and a ball mover with a lot of experience. Perfect role player.
Sterling Brown signs with Mavericks
2 years, $6.2 million (seasons aged 26-27)
Grade: B+
An NBA caliber wing, not much more. Better injury insurance than a fair amount of teams have.
Trey Lyles signs with Pistons
2 years, $5 million (seasons aged 25-26)
Grade: B
Trey Lyles really has never been good his whole career, but he's still got time. Mostly, he's the inverse of Kelly Olynyk, a defensive 4/5. Known commodities are good and bad in basketball, in this case good.
Abdel Nader re-signs with Suns
2 years, $4.2 million (seasons aged 28-29)
Grade: C+
Totally inconsequential amounts of money for a guy who is only pretty inconsequential. That's called good business.
Didi Louzada re-signs with Pelicans
4 years, $7.2 million (seasons aged 22-25)
Grade: B+
The Pelicans like him enough to keep him around for a while, and he is content with that for himself. Congratulations on being an NBA player, my man. Truly an indescribable feat.
Max Strus re-signs with Heat
2 years, $3.5 million (seasons aged 25-26)
Grade: B
This is as inconsequential as it gets, but I used my one N/A for comedic effect on Moe Harkless. Strus is a fine end of the bench guy, and there isn't much more to be said. He played a good little bit when the team got decimated by COVID in January-February. The Heat front office is really good, and they like him, so yeah.
Gabe Vincent re-signs with Heat
2 years, $3.5 million (seasons aged 25-26)
Grade: B
Same as the Strus blurb. Now they just need Chris Silva and the bench mob will be complete. Udonis Haslem signed a 22-year vet min deal last offseason.
Veteran minimum deals
It's basically impossible for these deals to be bad. Teams over the cap can sign as many of these deals as they want.
Andre Drummond signs with 76ers
1 year (season aged 28)
Grade: C+
Drummond sucks. As a legit backup, he could be fine. Hard to see if that helps or hurts him from here, but oh well. This is rough because it really slows his ascent up the all-time rebounding leaderboards. He's already 63rd!
Otto Porter signs with Warriors
1 year (season aged 28)
Grade: A+
This is massive for the Dubs. Porter is the best player to take the minimum in a while. The former third overall pick is a top-flight shooter, low maintenance, and defends really well. High intelligence. There's a reason the Wizards gave him $100 million once upon a time. He's a lot better than Kent Bazemore, Glenn Robinson III, or Alec Burks were for them.
Nemanja Bjelica signs with Warriors
1 year (season aged 33)
Grade: B
Belly can really shoot and pass it a little, that's good for a bigger dude. Can't do much else. He's one of those guys that's a good player, but if he plays you're in trouble.
Blake Griffin re-signs with Nets
1 year (season aged 32)
Grade: A+
Blake was awesome for Brooklyn. He did every little thing, and showed modest amounts of scoring punch. Before the injuries, Pistons Griffin was the most well-rounded offensive forward alive not named LeBron James. He kept rounding into form as the season and playoffs continued, so this is likely going to be a steal as his health further improves. I expect him to sign a notable deal for $10M+ annually next offseason. Good decision to bet on himself.
Rodney Hood signs with Bucks
1 year (season aged 28)
Grade: A+
The Bucks have to replace Bryn Forbes' shooting, and Hood has the potential to be better. He also helps their exceedingly thin wing depth. He's less of a negative than Forbes on defense, and slightly better inside the arc, at the cost of being a hair worse shooter.
Dewayne Dedmon signs with Heat
1 year (season aged 32)
Grade: C
Same concept as Bjelica.
Solomon Hill re-signs with Hawks
1 year (season aged 30)
Grade: B
Carmelo Anthony signs with Lakers
1 year (season aged 37)
Grade: A+
At long last, 'Melo ring chases. He chose between here and New York. The Knicks will still love him in his age 80 season, so it's the only call to get the chip while he can. He provides scoring and another old-ass body.
Malik Monk signs with Lakers
1 year (season aged 23)
Grade: broke my scale
Carmelo's A+ was because I liked it. This one is because it is the best dollar-for-dollar deal, perhaps, in NBA history.
Malik Monk has all-star potential. He is a freak. He can handle the ball, is an athlete, can bury ridiculous shots, is a higher end team defender, is low maintenance. He is seriously going to be the fourth-best player on this team. The only problem of his is that he played for Michael Jordan's franchise. He knows exactly what he's doing by signing a prove-it deal. And he gets some free diamonds.
Trevor Ariza signs with Lakers
1 year (season aged 36)
Grade: A
The Lakers need shooting and defense so badly around Russ-LeBron-AD.
Kent Bazemore signs with Lakers
1 year (season aged 32)
Grade: B-
The Lakers need shooting so badly. He probably won't play in the playoffs, but he's fine enough to help get through 82 games.
Wayne Ellington signs with Lakers
1 year (season aged 33)
Grade: B-
The Lakers need shooting so badly.
Dwight Howard signs with Lakers
1 year (season aged 35)
Grade: A
His third stint with the Lakers. I hope he picks another new jersey number. I still rock my #12 (yes, seriously). He gave them awesome center minutes alongside and in lieu of AD in the 2020 playoffs. They just threw him as hard as they could against Jokic and every other center, and he made their lives hell. That's valuable.
Cody Zeller signs with Trailblazers
1 year (season aged 29)
Grade: A+
This will go under the radar. Zeller is a quality big who can do a lot offensively. I'm surprised Golden State didn't want him. He could help a contender. Instead, he goes to a regular good team. This is a big upgrade over Enes Kanter.
Garrett Temple signs with Pelicans
3 years, unknown money (seasons aged 35-37)
Austin Rivers re-signs with Nuggets
1 year, unknown money
Dewayne Dedmon re-signs with Heat
1 year, unknown money
